9th Annual Fashion, Friends & the Fund Event Raises Cash for Sandusky County Cancer Care Fund

Over 170 women gathered to raise money for the Sandusky County Cancer Care Fund, a program of United Way, on Sunday, September 20th. The event was held at Anjulina’s Catering & Banquet Hall where guests were served hors d'oeuvres and drinks by “celebrity waiters” and were able to enjoy a balloon bonanza and silent auction raffle items that included name brand purses and bags. The event emcee, Joe Liszak, CEO of Community Health Services, shared how his organization was the first to donate to the fund in memory one of his staff member, Kay Letzring.

The event raised nearly $18,000, exceeding its goal and almost doubling last year’s proceeds. Program Specialist, Jill Simpson, coordinates the Cancer Care Fund at United Way of Sandusky County and is thrilled with the planning committee’s effort and event success. Simpson adds, “The funds will are used to assist Sandusky County residents for needs such as transportation costs to treatment centers, prescriptions, nutritional supplements, medical bills, and medical supplies. Many cancer patients are either living on fixed incomes or find they have to be off of work while receiving treatment. This fund helps to reduce the financial burden of the transportation and medical costs associated with treatment, allowing patients to focus their attention on getting well.” Since its inception in 2007, the Cancer Care fund has helped 588 cancer patients with over $279,000 in financial assistance.

Guest Speaker, Angela Allicock, owner of Angie’s Angels Daycare, shared her “Story of Strength” at the event. Angela contacted the United Way office in July of 2013 for assistance through the Sandusky County Cancer Care Fund after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Sponsors of the event included Beck Suppliers/Friendship Food Stores, The Bellevue Hospital, Crown Battery Manufacturing Company, Style Crest, Inc., Eye Centers of NWO, Fremont Federal Credit Union, KF Construction & Excavating, ProMedica Memorial Hospital, and Sprouse Insurance.
