United Way honors businesses at awards dinner

FREMONT- The United Way of Sandusky County honored several businesses and individuals for their work in the community Tuesday at the group's annual awards dinner.

Linda Pocock from Crown Battery Manufacturing Company was the recipient of the "Helping Hand" 2015 campaign award for helping to raise employee giving to $35,870 in 2015. Pocock has helped raise more than $156,000 for the United Way since 2010.Barb Mason received the group's 2016 Mary Recktenwald Volunteer Award for her work with the United Way board, Sandusky County Chamber of Commerce and development of the Best of Sandusky County Pizza Challenge, which raised money for scholarships for local students.

The group's 2015 United Way campaign raised $790,313, well over its $750,000 goal. That is more than $97,000 more than was raised in 2014. Executive Director Abby Slemmer said she hoped the organization could top the $800,000 mark in its 2016 campaign.

United Way of Sandusky County funds more than 30 programs in the county that focus on education, health and basic needs.

The group acknowledged several businesses with awards of excellence for corporate support of $5,000 or more. Those businesses were Croghan Colonial Bank, Crown Battery Manufacturing Company, First Energy Foundation, Green Bay Packaging, Mosser Group/WMOG, Style Crest Enterprises and the Whirlpool Foundation.

The Chamber of Commerce of Sandusky County, Old Fort Banking Company and Stamm Elementary School each had 100 percent participation during the United Way fundraising campaign in 2015.

Gibsonburg Schools won the Outstanding School Employee Campaign Award, while Whirlpool's Clyde division won the "Extra Mile" award for increasing their contributions by $53,539 over the previous year's campaign, a figure matched by the company.

Otis Elementary School, the Sandusky County Department of Job and Family Services, Fremont Middle School and the WSOS Community Action Commission won employee achievement awards for having the top percentage increases in their employee United Way campaigns.

Old Fort Banking Company, Mosser Group/WMOG, Croghan Colonial Bank and Whirlpool also earned corporate awards of excellence, which is given to businesses with the top corporate gifts per capita.
